Movement Studies: The study of movement of the human body is both a science and an art. It is the relationship between the human psyche encapsuled in the body and how it relates to its environment. It's the story of evolution. How did the body come to move the way it does? How does the arm and shoulder girdle reach out into the world? How does the leg structure and pelvis support us out of gravity? How do the senses help us orient? And what about emotions? Why do we feel happy when we dance? Relaxed at the smell of flowers? Anxious at the sound of a siren?
As a science we study the structure of the body and break it down into smaller parts to see how they come together to move. We study the function of these parts. We strive to find optimal organization of all the parts into the whole. Then we move the whole in different ways watching it learn, adapt and create new possiblities, new choreograpy. We play with many variables to keep this new whole unit thriving.
As an art we wonder why is it that when we move in new and interesting ways it affects us emotionally. We expand this thriving new body to experience gravity, space, sensation. We enrich those connections between body, brain and emotion. Optimal health and beauty unfold. We allow our body to get lost in the flow. We move to be alive, thrive and connect to this moment, in this body on this earth.
We will explore a variety of movement methods to improve our connection with the body and its connection with the Earth. We invite you to join us in our exploration of psyche, body, spirit, and movement. Along the way we will have fun, improve our fitness levels, decrease our stress levels, learn to move and breathe with greater ease.
